Preparation and Characterization of Biomimetic Catalysts

Project no. 1364 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017

Summary

Biomimetic CuO, Fe2O3 and Co3O4 catalysts were prepared by using pollen and tomato skin bio-templates according to biomimetic catalyst preparation methods derived from the literature. Surface morphology of catalysts prepared from pollen and tomato skin were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy diffusion X-Ray Analysis. Micrographs showed that pollen grains and tomato skin bio-templates were successfully mimicked by copper oxide, iron oxide and cobalt oxide metal structures. In addition to the metals (Fe, Cu or Co) in the catalyst structures, elements such as potassium and phosphorus were found during the calcination process due to the diffusion of the minerals in the inner layer of the bio-templates to the surface. In order to enrich the elemental analysis, the spectra obtained in X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy analysis applied to copper oxide catalysts were compared with the literature data. Biomimetic catalyst phases, surface areas and magnetic properties are characterized by X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) analysis. In addition, DCu-XGO (DCu: copper oxide inspired from tomato skin; GO: Graphene oxide; X, weight percent of graphene oxide: 10, 50 and 90) catalysts were prepared and surface structures were investigated. The crystal phase structure, magnetic hysteresis loop and surface area ofbiomimetic copper oxide catalyst containing 50% graphene oxide with a high catalytic performance and reasonable cost were investigated.
