Evaluation of Oil Obtained from Papaver Somniferum (Poppy) Seeds (Oleum Papaveris Seminis) in Terms of Content, Properties and Pharmacy

Project no. 23550 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022

Summary

Papaver somniferum L. (Poppy Plant) is a plant that has been cultivated in the world for many years and is used in many fields thanks to its alkaloids and oil. The capsule-shaped fruits of the plant contain important alkaloids for the pharmaceutical and health sector such as morphine, codeine, and papaverine. The collected fruits of the plant are separated from the seeds by heat treatment. When the seeds of the plant properly removed, seeds do not contain alkaloids. The use of seeds and oil does not cause any opioid poisoning. Semen Papaveris is not only important for the fatty acids it contains, but also has potential in terms of amino acids and minerals it contains. It is traditionally included in some meals in our country. Seeds are generally used to obtain oil.

Obtaining oil from its seed can be examined under two main headings as extraction and pressing methods. Although the pressing methods are classified as hot and cold press among themselves, the most frequently used is the cold press method. With this method, obtained oil is high quality, but the yield is low. Extraction methods are examined under two main headings as Soxhlet and Supercritical fluid extraction. The content of the oil depends on the solvent and method used. For this reason, the extraction method and solvent should be selected according to the content of the oil desired to be obtained. The quality control of the oil is also very important.

Fatty acids contained in poppy oil; palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid. The ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the content of the oil is very high. Poppy oil has the potential to be used in many industrial areas such as food and cosmetics, thanks to its rich linoleic acid and low linolenic acid content.

Within the scope of our graduation project, we obtained poppy oil by Soxhlet extraction from the poppy seeds we bought from the market, and we calculated the yield. We conducted quality control studies on this oil we obtained and a different oil sample obtained from the market by cold pressing technique. For this purpose, we performed acidity index, relative density and refractive index determinations, which are basic quality control studies, on oil samples and we evaluated the results by comparing.
