Investigation of the Effects of Ethoprophos on a Earthworm Species Eisenia fetida

Project no. 22945 · Status: Kapanmış · 2021

Summary

Earthworms digest organic waste and recycle it. Because of these roles, they are an important part of the terrestrial ecosystem. In addition, earthworms significantly affect the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil with their feeding, defecation and gallery opening activities in the soil. Therefore, widespread use of earthworm fertilizers in agriculture has increased. In this study, the histopathological effects of Ethoprophos, an organophosphorus pesticide, on Eisenia fetida were investigated. In the experiment, 5 groups were formed as control, solvent control, 15mg/kg, 30mg/kg, 60mg/kg based on the doses applied in agriculture. 15 adult individuals were weighed and placed in each jar. The moisture and pH of the soil were measured regularly, and the temperature was kept constant at 20 ±2 ̊C. Each week, the animals were weighed. On the 7th day, 14th day and 21st day, samples were taken from all treatment groups and body parts taken from the posterior part of the clitellum were fixed with Bouin. 5μ thickness sections were stained with Hematoxylin & Eosin, Mallory Trichrome, Periodic acid-Schiff, Alcian Blue staining methods. Dose-related deterioration in the muscle tissue, mucin secretions accumulated in the body wall of earthworms in dose groups, degenerations and vacuolization in the epithelial cells were determined.
