Summary

In this research, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between the percentage of foreign players’ played time in football clubs, which based on the foreign player status, and the UEFA Rankings by comparing Turkish Super League and the “Big Five” European Football Leagues. The data of the research covered the football seasons between 1992/93 - 2019/20. In the research, the percentage of foreign players’ played time in the clubs which participated in UEFA competitions from Turkish Super League and “Big Five” European Football Leagues were considered. Correlation analysis, one of the statistical analysis methods, was used in the research. The percentage of foreign players’ played time and the UEFA Rankings were analysed comparatively. The research results show that the foreign player status and regulations applied in Turkish Super League do not have any effect on the success of Turkish football clubs in UEFA competitions. The results also demonstrate that the foreign player status and regulations positively effect on the success of English and Spanish football clubs in UEFA competitions, that they have a negative effect on the success of Italian and French football clubs in UEFA competitions, while they had no effect on the success of German football clubs in these competitions. It was also determined in the research that the foreign player status, which allows 11 foreign players on the field at the same time and has been applied in Turkish Super League for 5 seasons starting from 2015/16 football season, has had no positive contribution to the success of the Turkish Football in the international arena.
