Summary
<p>The diacritical system employed to ensure the correct recitation of the Qur'an is a subject of paramount significance within the fields of Qur'anic studies, the science of Qur'anic readings (Qira'at), Islamic civilizational history, and linguistic approaches. This diacritical system plays a vital role in preserving the Qur'anic text and safeguarding the various readings. Classical sources attribute the initial application of diacritics to the Qur'an to Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali. However, diverse perspectives exist regarding the origin and development of this diacritical system. Notably, some Orientalists have posited the claim that the diacritical system used in the Qur'an was adopted from the Syriac. This study delves into an examination of the emergence, evolution, and originality of diacritics within the Qur'anic text. By investigating the connections between the Arabic script and the Nabataean and Syriac writing systems, the historical trajectory of the diacritical system is analyzed. Furthermore, the assertion that the diacritical system was derived from the Syriac is evaluated in light of both supporting and opposing viewpoints. The findings of this study indicate that the diacritical system in the Qur'an is a complex structure intricately linked to the linguistic and cultural conditions of its time. The claim of Syriac influence on the diacritical system is a significant point of contention, yet further research is imperative to reach a definitive conclusion. It is hoped that this research, prepared as a project study, will fill an important gap in the field of Quranic sciences and contribute to the understanding of the history of the textualization of the Quran.</p>
