Determination of Suitable Areas for The Livestock Enterprises in Bornova-İzmir Region by Using Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System
Project no. 863 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016
Summary
In this research project, in rural area of İzmir-Bornova determining the research field, firstly the current situation of animal husbandry, the environmental problems encountered and the future status of the enterprises were determined and then using Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) methods, it was aimed to identify the most suitable areas for animal husbandry operations in line with legal and technical principles. The current situation of animal husbandry in the research area has been determined by questionnaires, measurements and observations with 39 animal enterprises located in 12 residential units and the reeves in 15 residential units. At the beginning of the environmental problems reported to the reeves are the visual pollutions generated by the manure piles of the enterprises. It has been determined that the planning and the use of mechanization are inadequate, hygiene and animal welfare cannot be achieved, and the awareness of organization in the farms is insufficient. A significant numbers of the enterprises are located in the residential area. In addition to the insufficiency of the pastures, the costs of many production inputs, especially feeds are high. It has been determined that it will be difficult for enterprises located in the regions which are lost its village status to continue livestock operations especially in the face of legal constraints on human health and environmental protection. The settlements on the northern side of the province are under pressure from forests and tourism. In addition to the problems of finding suitable land for livestock businesses, the inadequacy of pasture and water supply is also quite common. On the southern side of the province, there is a press of the developing industry as well as forest and stone quarries. Besides these increasing pressures, the inadequacy of state aid has accelerated the abandonment of animal production. Significant correlations were found statistically positive or negative among the characteristics examined in the enterprises. The suitable areas for livestock operation were analyzed by using RS and GIS in Bornova district boundaries. As a result of this analysis, it was determined that the suitable area for livestock operation and bee operation are 3.3%and 5.31%of research area respectively. It may be possible to minimize damage to environment, to achieve the animal welfare, furthermore realize the sustainable, fertile livestock and bee breeding through animal breeding enterprises established in determined suitable areas.
