The effect of grapefruit juice on the increase of catechin epicatechin and epigallocatechins in green tea (Camellia sinensis)

Project no. 22401 · Status: Kapanmış · 2021

Summary

Tea (Camellia sinensis); It is an evergreen plant belonging to Theaceae family, likes rainy and warm climates. Green tea has many beneficial effects on health. Plant contains mostly catechins, one of the polyphenolic compounds. The green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) used in this study will be collected from a field in the latitude and longitude of Rize (39.9333635°N, 32.8597419°E) in northeastern Turkey. Young leaves will be taken into callus culture first. A subculture will then be transferred every 2 weeks for up to 45 days. Grapefruit juice extract will be applied in two different doses (5% and 20%) to 45-day-old calli. Grapefruit juice added to the media will be monitored for 10 days and then harvested, and the amount of catechins will be determined by HPLC. As a result, it will be determined by HPLC how much grapefruit juice applied in different doses to green tea callus can increase catechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin substances. Polyphenols; as compounds responsible for color and odor in plants; has a protective effect on the plant from diseases and damages by taking part in pigment biosynthesis and defense. Members of the catechin family, which have recently been of great importance among polyphenols; catechin, epicatechin and epigallocatechins; are responsible for the protective effect against many diseases, especially cancer. When we look at Sigma Aldrich's website, the prices of 1 gram of catechin, epicatechin and epigallocatechin are 58,400 Euros, 57,000 Euros and 44,200 Euros, respectively. In order to reduce the cost of catechin, epicatechin and epigallocatechin substances and to contribute to domestic and national capital, the effect of grapefruit juice on increasing catechins in Camellia sinensis, where these substances are the most abundant, will be investigated.
