“Anaian Glazed Ceramics” by the way of the Late Byzantine Samples from the Excavation of Kadıkalesi, Kuşadası
Project no. 23863 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022
Summary

The Kadıkalesi/Anaia excavation was initiated in 2001 by Prof. Dr. Zeynep Mercangöz and her team, continuing for 20 years. Currently, it is being carried out under the scientific advisory of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suna Çağaptay. In the Byzantine Fortress at the ancient city of Anaia, today known as Kadıkalesi, Byzantine glazed ceramics are highlighted as significant archaeological findings. These findings suggest that Anaia, being a port city, was involved in ceramic trade as both an importer and exporter throughout different periods. This study aims to conduct a detailed evaluation of selected glazed ceramic samples from the Late Byzantine Period, which can be referred to as such for Western Anatolia. The study seeks to identify production diversity and capacity, as well as points of demand. In addition to these goals, it aims to uncover ceramic products received by the city from both nearby and distant regions. Therefore, it was necessary first to classify a wide ceramic repertoire into a systematic categorization. In this scope, 27.099 pieces of glazed ceramics were examined. The catalog includes 522 groups of different Late Byzantine Period glazed ceramic findings, aiming to obtain multi-faceted data. To better evaluate concrete data on pottery production, especially from the Late Byzantine Period, mineralogical and chemical analyses of the glazed ceramics were conducted. For this purpose, 45 ceramic samples were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (SEM-EDS) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF).

Keywords: Byzantine, Anaia, Glazed Ceramic, Production.
