Histological follow-up protocol and determination of histological features of cadaver tissues embalmed with modified Larssen solution
Project no. 24090 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022
Summary

Objective: The aim of the study developing histological follow-up protocols and determine the histological properties of cadavers embalmed with Modified Lassen Solution (MLS), which has organoleptic properties suitable for surgical training and necessary properties for biomechanical research.

Material and Methods: Artery, muscle, skin, thyroid and lymph node samples harvested from 10 cadavers supplied to Ege University Faculty of Medicine Department of Anatomy and embalmed by arterial perfusion with MLS and thawed at most 3 times. Samples followed by MLS, 4% Fromalin (FA) solution and cryo (CRY) for hsitological examination. Criteria reflecting histological characteristics were determined for each tissue, and these criteria were scored on a scale of 0-3 by 3 histologists.

Results: The MLS embalmed cadavers can be stained with MLS, FA and CRY follow-ups, Hematoxylin & Eosin and Masson Trichrome stains and examined histologically. A standard image set suitable for the scale was created for cadaver tissues embalmed with MLS. While tissue tracking with FA is the most suitable method for arteries, tracking with MLS is the most suitable method for examining soft tissues such as muscle, thyroid and lymph nodes. FA tracking is suitable for the general appearance of the skin, and MLS tracking is suitable for the lower details. CRY is the most suitable method for imaging fine details in these tissues, but signs of tissue deterioration such as separation of artery layers, muscle fragmentation, separation of skin layers, and separation between thyroid layers and cells are more common with CRY.

Discussion/Conclusion: In the study, histological follow-up protocols for MLS embalmed cadavers were developed, and it was demonstrated that this cadaver model preserved its histological features and was suitable for histological training and research. The findings will be a reference for future research with MLS embalmed cadavers and the development of the solution.

Keywords: Cadaver, Modified Larsen Solution, Histology, Formalin, Cryo
