Analyzing the Relationship Between Marriage Rates and the Housing Market at the NUTS2 Level: Panel Data Analysis
Project no. 32528 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2024
Summary

In Turkey, encouraging marriage is a key component of the pronatalist population policies currently in place. Governments encourage marriage, and thus, fertility rates, through policies such as dowry aid and birth support. This project considers housing costs as a significant barrier to marriage in Turkey. Based on this motivation, this study investigates the relationship between marriage rates and the housing market across 26 subregions classified under the Statistical Regional Units Classification (NUTS). Based on NUTS-2 regions, the analysis covers the period 2011-2023 and employs the Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimator. The study, which examines the relationship between marriage rates and housing prices at the regional level, includes per capita income, women's educational attainment, and female employment as control variables. The results of the study revealed a negative relationship between marriage rates and housing prices. Furthermore, per capita income and women’s educational attainment also negatively influence the dependent variable, whereas female employment increases the marriage rate. Overall, empirical findings indicate that housing costs are among the factors that slow the pace of marriage and, consequently, reduce fertility.
