Project no. 24213 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022

Summary

This research was carried by 24 students for examine the effect of 4-week delivery room clinical practice of Ege University 4th grade nursing students on birth perception, fear of birth and birth preferences in the fall semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. Research was conducted as a mixed method research in which both qualitative and quantitative methods would be used. Quantitative methods were obtained from Demographic Information Form, Pre-Pregnancy Fear of Birth Scale and Traumatic Birth Perception Scale, and qualitative methods were obtained from Semi-Structured Questionnaire using phenomenology design through 5 focus group interviews. As a result of research, while there was a decrease in the fear of birth of the students at the end of the clinical practice, there was no change in the perception of traumatic birth but there was an increase in the preference for cesarean. Three main topics (Perceptions for normal delivery, Preferences for delivery method, Needs and expectations of pregnant women) were obtained as qualitative findings. Students generally defined birth as being happy at the end of an anxious and challenging process, and they preferred cesarean because of the pain phase of normal birth and the fear of episiotomy. They stated that pregnant women need positive communication, respect for privacy, education and information, evidence-based care and a companion in the labour room.
