Summary

Adolescent behavioral problems are influenced not only by parents' parenting practices/skills but also by the gender norms of the society in which they live. In Western countries, the effort to functionally define parenting practices has led to numerous scales measuring the phenomenon. This study aims to develop a scale for evaluating parents' parenting practices with adolescent children in Turkey and conduct a validity and reliability study of the scale. Additionally, the study examines the relationship between behavioral problems in late adolescence and the quality of the parent-adolescent relationship, adolescents' sexist tendencies, and stereotypes in romantic relationships. The research was conducted on two separate sample groups. The first sample group was formed to develop the scale. A total of 612 people participated in the study's first phase, including 312 adolescents aged 14-18 who were attending high school and their 312 parents. The second sample group was formed to examine the relationship between behavioral problems in late adolescence and the quality of the parent-adolescent relationship, adolescents' sexist tendencies, and stereotypes in romantic relationships. A total of 446 university students aged 18-22 participated in the study's second phase.

The measurement tools used in the study were the Parenting Practices Scale-Adolescent Form, the SCL-90 Symptom Checklist, the Parent-Adolescent Relationship Quality Scale-mother form and father form, and the Ambivalent Sexism İnventory and Stereotypes in Romantic Relationships Scale.

In the scale development study, when the reliability and validity studies of the Parenting Practices Scale-Adolescent Form were examined, it was found that the scale measured the latent variable it aimed to measure with a low level of random error, and the total and subscale scores obtained from the scale reflected the levels of the individuals in possessing the targeted characteristics. The analyses related to the criterion validity of the scale showed that the established model was highly compatible with the data. In light of all the findings, it can be said that the Parenting Practices Scale-Adolescent Form validly measures the differences in parenting practices observed in parents and the psychological structure that creates these differences.

In the second part of the study, it was found that as sexism in adolescents increased, behavioral problems also increased; as the quality of the father-adolescent relationship deteriorated, behavioral problems increased; and as the quality of the mother-adolescent relationship deteriorated, adolescents' behavioral problems increased. When the gender variable, included in the analysis as a dummy variable, was examined, it was found that behavioral problems were more common in females compared to males; thus, being female was a significant predictor of behavioral problems.

Keywords: Parenting.
