Investigation of the Effect of Reinforcement Fabric Fiber Density on the Mechanical Properties of Industrial Products in Polymer Matrix Composites

Project no. 30800 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2023

Summary

Composite materials are replacing traditional materials with advantages such as ease of shaping, lightness, strength, and aesthetic appearance. At least two different material groups are needed to create a composite, one of which is the main (matrix) structure and the other is the reinforcement structure. Reinforcements are added to the composite as fibers, fabrics woven with different frequencies and directions from fibers, particles or hybrid structures. Today, carbon, aramid and basalt fiber reinforcements are widely used in industrial products. When comparing the mechanical properties of these fabric types, it is important to compare them according to fiber woven density for correct design.

In the project, the effect of the woven density of the selected reinforcement fabric and different reinforcement types with the same fiber density on the mechanical properties of the composite was observed. Samples were cut from composite products produced with the vacuum infusion method, tensile and 3-point bending tests were performed, and the results were examined. Thus, it was aimed to prevent the difficulties encountered when designing industrial products produced from polymer matrix composites and making material selection. It will be easier to determine the reinforcement that can meet the expected features of the product and to improve the mechanical properties of this reinforcement according to its fiber density. In the project, the mechanical properties of polymer matrix composites were examined depending on the type and fiber density of the reinforcement fabrics woven from carbon, aramid and basalt fibers, and the effect of the density of the fibers forming the reinforcement fabric on the mechanical properties of the product was revealed. Thus, designers were provided with basic information and literature data in terms of the mechanical design of the composite product. As a result of the tests, it was observed that the tensile and bending strengths increased with the increase in fiber density in carbon fiber reinforced composites. When samples with the same fiber density were compared, it was seen that the aramid sample had the highest tensile strength and the basalt sample had the lowest tensile strength. The elongation amounts of the samples before rupture show that the carbon reinforced sample exhibited the most brittle behavior and the aramid reinforced sample the most ductile behavior. The lowest bending stress was seen in the aramid reinforced sample.
