Archiving the Turkish Classical Music Vocal Repertoire in the “From Our World of Voice and Instrument” Program from the Ali Rıza Avni Tınaz Archive: Transforming Archival Materials into Academic Knowledge
Project no. 33083 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2025
Summary

This project was prepared by Ali Rıza Avni Tınaz an archivist, radio producer, composer, and writer, and which was broadcast continuously for 37 years, earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

It has been determined that these recordings, which were previously digitized as part of earlier projects, have not been systematically examined; they contain inconsistencies in terms of titles and content, and have not been classified. Accordingly, the project involves classifying the verbal works of traditional Turkish music found within the digitized audio recordings under detailed categories—such as makam, genre, composer, lyricist, performer, and usûl—using accurate and reliable data.

The project began with a database containing records of 7,700 works, including data on 153 different modes, 111 different genres, 468 composers, and 655 performers. The project team examined the records one by one within the framework of a systematic listening and coding protocol; data for each piece was meticulously recorded under 9 different headings, resulting in a well-organized and accessible archival structure.

The findings reveal that this archive represents an extraordinary wealth of documentation for the traditional Turkish music repertoire. With its unique nature in the field, this work serves as a comprehensive reference source that will not only contribute to the preservation of the national musical heritage but also lay the groundwork for future research in musicology, ethnomusicology, and performance studies.

We would like to thank the Ege University State Conservatory of Turkish Music and the Scientific Research Projects Commission of the Ege University Rectorate for their support in carrying out this study.
