Preparation of Phosphate Group-Containing Cellulose and Investigation of Its Nickel (Ni2+) Removal Performance

Project no. 24174 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022

Summary

In this study, the removal of Ni2+ ions from aqueous solutions was investigated using cellulose sorbent functionalized with phosphate groups. The effect of sorbent dosage and initial solution pH on Ni2+ removal was examined. Additionally, modeling of ion exchange mechanism and reaction kinetics was carried out through sorption isotherms and kinetic studies. Nickel analysis was performed using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS).

The experimental results with phosphate-functionalized cellulose showed that the optimum sorbent dosage for Ni2+ removal was found to be 0.05g, and the working pH range was determined to be 4-6. Kinetic studies revealed that the ion exchange kinetics of the sorbent were quite fast, with 99% of Ni2+ ions being removed within 20 minutes. The kinetic studies indicated that the Ni2+ removal with the prepared sorbent followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, while the equilibrium studies showed compliance with the Langmuir isotherm. Thermodynamic studies conducted with the prepared sorbents demonstrated the spontaneous nature of Ni2+ removal (∆G<0). Regeneration studies showed that the sorbent could be regenerated with 0.1 M HCl, NaCl, or H2SO4.

Selectivity studies revealed that the presence of Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ ions at low concentrations did not affect the Ni2+ removal rate.

Keywords: Ion exchange, Nickel, Cellulose, Water treatment, Chelation formation.
