Project no. 32698 · Status: Kapanmış · 2024

Summary

Laurus nobilis L. (bay laurel) (Lauraceae) is a Mediterranean plant which grows as a tree or shrub that does not shed its leaves in winter. Traditionally used as a tea for its expectorant, antipyretic, and digestive properties, it has also been reported to be used in the treatment of hemorrhoids, heart complaints, food poisoning and abdominal pain, and diabetes, kidney, and stomach ailments. It has also been reported to be used as an emetic and externally to treat eczema.

As part of this project, the leaves of L. nobilis, an aromatic and medicinal plant found particularly along the coastal areas of the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Black Sea regions of Turkey, were collected from Bayraklı-Bornova, Izmir, and phytochemical properties of the drug specimen were determined using GC-MS and LC-Q-TOF/MS methods. Furthermore, due to the limited number of studies in the literature, drug specimen was evaluated for its anti-acetylcholinesterase activity. In addition to essential oil analysis, the content analysis of the extracts prepared with methanol, and aqueous-methanol showed consistency with the data available in the literature.

L. nobilis is used both as a medicinal plant and as a spice. Therefore, the identification of crude drugs that comply with pharmacopoeial standards in terms of chemical composition is of great importance.
