Identification of macroalgae found in Izmir Bay and determination of coloring potential of pigments

Project no. 21237 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019

Summary

Seaweed contains high amounts of protein, fatty acids and minerals. Biochemical contents of macro algae species, light, temperature, etc. It varies depending on the circumstances. Depending on salinity and temperature conditions, the Aegean Sea has high species diversity in terms of macro-algae. In this study, the water temperature at the stations determined in the Aegean Sea Gulf coast of Izmir province was measured as lowest 10,1 °C, highest 21,1 °C, and the pH values were measured as minimum 7,8 and maximum 8,1 during the entire trial period. Aegean Sea Izmir Gulf Coast 12 macro algae species; green algae Ulva rigida, Ulva lactuca, Ulva compressa, Chaetomorpha linum, red algae Gracilaria verrucosa, Gracilaria gracilis, Laurancia papillosa, Laurencia obtusa, Corallina officinalis and brown algae Cystoseira barbata, Cystoseira crinita, Halopteris scoparia were identified. The macro algae species collected from the Gulf coast of Izmir province were dried at room temperature (25 °C) in the shade, powdered and kept in a dark environment at 20 °C until analysis was done. Pigments (chlorophyll-a and total carotenoids) were analyzed by spectrophotometric method. Macro algae species have high levels of pigment values. According to the data obtained in this study, economic values of pigment source of some macro algae species in Izmir Bay were revealed.
