The effect of different macroalgae feeding on growth of Holothuria tubulosa (Gmelin, 1788) juveniles
Project no. 1139 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017
Summary
In this study, the effect of feeding Holothuria tubulosa, a common sea cucumber species in the Aegean and the Mediterranean, with 2 different macroalgae species was investigated in laboratory conditions. Enteremorpha intestinalis (green macroalgae) and Cystoseira barbata (brown macroalgae) powder macroalgae were given to sea cucumbers separately in two groups for 45 days. Average 18,38 ± 0,82 g of sea cucumbers, which were collected from the nature, were placed in tanks at a stock density of 183,84 g / m2. During the trial, daily feed amount was 2.5% of the biomass weight. Crude protein ratios of macroalgae were 15.7 ± 0.11% for E. intestinalis (EI) and 11.08± 0.09% for C. barbata (CB); crude fat ratios were 1.38 ± 0.04% (EI) and 1.64 ± 0.05% (CB); crude cellulose was 5,28 ± 0,07% (EI) and 4,73 ± 0,06% (CB). The gross energies of the macroalgae are EI 2520,64 ± 21,10 kcal / kg, CB 2606,12 ± 20,47 kcal / kg. At the end of the experiment, the mean weight of sea cucumbers was 19.58 ± 1.11 g in EI group and 20.31 ± 1.63gr in the CB group. There were no significant difference between the groups. Specific growth rates were 0.15 ± 0.02% in the EI group and 0.25% to 0.04% in the CB group. The feed conversion rates of the groups were 10.43 ± 1.02 in EI group and 4.63 ± 0.84 in CB group. As a result of the analysis of protein, fat and cellulose discarded by sea cucumbers EI group consumed 99.17% of the protein content, 90.58% of the fat content and 99.62% of the cellulose. In the CB group, sea cucumbers consumed protein 99.37% of the protein, 97.56% of the fat and 97.88% of the cellulose. The results showed that both types of macroalgae species could be used in sea cucumber feeding. However, brown algae C. barbata showed a better growth rate for sea cucumbers in this study.
