Antiviral effect screening in microalgae and cyanobacteria
Project no. 23516 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022
Summary

In recent years, the use of microalgae in various industrial areas such as cosmetics, medicine, and human and animal food has become widespread. They have a very important point economically. Microalgae used for wastewater treatment are the most effective and economical way to convert solar energy into biomass. They have high nutritional values due to the high protein, carbohydrate, and fatty acids they contain. Today, its use in medicine is becoming widespread as its therapeutic properties come to the fore. Microalgae, which live spontaneously in freshwater or the seas, also constitute the bottom layer of the food chain. Chlorophyll-containing microalgae use sunlight to control the amount of carbon dioxide in the environment and regulate the pH level of the water they are in. Microalgae, which we encounter in many species, are propagated by culture. Microalgae have different morphological and physiological characteristics. At the same time, their biological properties also vary due to the metabolites they contain. The therapeutic properties of microalgae have been the subject of scientific studies many times. Microalgae are used in nutritious food and food supplements. It has been stated in the literature that microalgae have anticancer, cholesterol-lowering, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral effects and also stimulates the immune system. In this project, the antiviral properties of different extracts obtained from microalgae and cyanobacteria species in the Ege University Microalgae Culture Collection (EGEMACC-https://egemacc.com/index.php) will be investigated.
