Investigation of the Disinfectant Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide on Impression Materials
Project no. 23703 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022
Summary

In dentistry, taking impressions during prosthetic treatments is a critical process. For this purpose, a wide variety of impression materials with different properties are available. It is of great importance to disinfect impression materials with varying properties after they are used in the patient’s mouth and before they are sent to the laboratory. Disinfectants that can be used for this purpose include glutaraldehydes, sodium hypochlorite, iodophors, alcohols, chlorhexidine, and phenolic compounds. Additionally, the usage methods, purposes, and concentrations of disinfectants can vary, making the appropriate selection of material challenging.

In this project, the disinfection effect of hydrogen peroxide, which is easily accessible, cost-effective, and has no side effects on oral tissues, on impression materials will be evaluated in comparison with frequently used disinfectants.

A review of the literature reveals that while there are studies examining the disinfection capabilities and dimensional and structural effects of disinfectant solutions on impression materials, there are no studies that specifically compare the effects of hydrogen peroxide with other disinfectant solutions on the disinfection of impression materials. Moreover, current disinfectant solutions are typically tested on standardized contaminated solutions before being marketed, and sufficient data on their disinfection effects on oral microbiota are lacking.

According to the power analysis conducted for this project, samples measuring 1 cm x 1 cm with a height of 3 mm will be prepared, with eight samples from each of the following groups: type A and C silicone elastomers, polyether impression materials, and alginate impression materials. The prepared samples will then be immersed in the included disinfectant agents, namely sodium hypochlorite, glutaraldehyde, and hydrogen peroxide, as well as a control group with physiological saline solution, after which the effectiveness of the disinfectants will be evaluated.
