Determining the Challenges Encountered by Turkish Language Teachers in Grammar Instruction
Project no. 32466 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2024
Summary

At every level of education, various difficulties are experienced in understanding grammar topics. The disruptions that arise during the teaching and learning of grammar are among the reasons that create problems in students’ learning and use of their mother tongue. The ones who can notice these problems most quickly are Turkish language teachers. Teachers’ observations, experiences, and opinions play a key role in providing the most accurate analysis of the situation in the field. When a primary school student’s basic language skills are weak, this not only prevents them from demonstrating sufficient performance in later stages of education and across all subjects, but also leads to poor results for our country in international assessment programs. The United Nations’ “Quality Education” goal; UNESCO’s normative frameworks in the field of language policy and education as well as its support for good practices in mother-tongue education; the policy of the Basic Law of National Education of the Republic of Turkey, which emphasizes the necessity of teaching the Turkish language at every level of education without distorting its characteristics; and the Research Report on 21st Century Skills and Values, among other determinants, all highlight the necessity of eliminating the current problems in the teaching and learning of Turkish. However, when the literature is examined, it is seen that current studies on identifying these problems are insufficient.

The aim of this project is to identify the problems experienced in the process of grammar teaching and learning based on the opinions of Turkish language teachers working at the upper primary school level. As a data collection tool, a semi-structured interview form consisting of open-ended questions, developed by the project director, will be used.

It is aimed that the project results will contribute to the development of comprehensive measures and related policies addressing the problems encountered in grammar teaching in our country. Furthermore, the project seeks not only to reveal teacher-related issues that disrupt students’ learning processes but also to remind decision-makers and experts of their responsibilities in eliminating grammatical inadequacies that hinder students’ complete and accurate use of their mother tongue.
