DEVELOPMENT OF NEXT-GENERATION TEXTILE SURFACES USING 3D PRINTING WITH DIFFERENT FILAMENT STRUCTURES
Project no. 32421 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2024
Summary

It is well known that in recent years, the textile and ready-to-wear industries have been seeking sustainable alternatives to traditional production methods. For this reason, additive manufacturing systems using 3D printers have also become a focus of research in this field. However, research has shown that many existing 3D-printed textile structures resemble decorative lattice or chainmail designs rather than functional textile surfaces suitable for apparel applications. In this context, this study proposes a systematic approach to developing next-generation fabric structures using additive manufacturing systems.

Five different types of filaments were used within the scope of the project to produce flexible and wearable surface structures. These include TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane), PLA (Polylactic Acid), HYPER PLA (High-Speed Polylactic Acid), ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), and PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate). Using these filaments, a total of 120 different samples were produced by varying surface patterns, surface thicknesses, layer height, layer thickness, and infill density. The developed structures were evaluated in terms of thickness, air permeability, drape, and sewing and bonding strengths. For comparison purposes, woven poplin and knitted suprem fabrics—commonly used in the industry, particularly for the production of shirts and basic T-shirts—were used as reference surfaces. The joining processes for the developed surfaces were carried out using an ultrasonic sewing technique.

The findings highlight the potential of additive manufacturing technology for developing next-generation textile surfaces and contribute to the development of sustainable, digitally produced, and customizable textile products.
