Summary

Objective: Implant-supported overdenture prostheses are preferred to rehabilitate edentulous patients in atrophic edentulous patients. However, there are no detailed studies on how these implant applications affect the endurance of the mandible, which has already decreased due to atrophy, against frontal traumatic forces. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the effects of traditional full denture two-implant and three-implant supported overdenture prosthesis systems applied in atrophic fully edentulous mandibles on the endurance of the mandible against frontal traumatic forces. Materials and methods: An atrophic mandible was modeled in a computer environment. Traditional full denture, two implant supported locator attachment overdenture prosthesis, two implant supported bar attachment overdenture prosthesis, three implanted locater attachment overdenture prosthesis, three implanted bar attachment bar attachment overdenture prosthesis were applied in computer environment to simulate 5 different treatment models. Static linear analyzes were performed by applying 2000N force from a circular area of 1 cm diameter perpendicular to the frontal plane from the symphysis region to all models. As a result of the analyses, Pmax, Pmin and von Mises stress values on the mandible were obtained. Results: The stresses occurring in the models with the 3rd implant placed in the midline exceeded the endurance level of the mandible. The lowest stresses occurred in the models with bar attachment overdenture prosthesis applied with two implants. The stresses occurring in the condyle and angulus region remained below the endurance level of the mandible, and it was observed that the stresses occurred mostly in the symphysis region. It was observed that the use of bar attachment distributed the stresses from the symphysis to the condyle.
