Summary

Trabecular bone (TB) exhibits a porous architecture, which makes it challenging to accurately determine its elastic-plastic mechanical properties using only conventional destructive compression tests. This project aims to develop a finite element method (FEM)-based on Bayesian optimization interface for the biomechanical characterization of trabecular bone's elastic-plastic behavior. The interface, implemented in a generic PYTHON framework, integrates image processing, experimental mechanical measurements, finite element analysis, and optimization algorithms. Using this interface, bone microarchitecture reconstructed from micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) data and corresponding compression test results are jointly processed through FEM simulations and Bayesian optimization to estimate the mechanical properties of TB. The mechanical parameters responsible for the experimentally observed deformations under compression are inversely identified via this framework. By bridging in-vitro data (imaging and mechanical testing) with in-silico approaches (numerical simulation and optimization), the developed interface facilitates a deeper understanding of the mechanical behavior of trabecular bone. The proposed interface not only enables the determination of the mechanical properties of bone tissue, but also holds the potential to facilitate the modeling of mechanical variations in future studies.
