The Effect of Tourniquet Times on Nerve Damage in Upper Extremity Surgical Procedures

Project no. 20832 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2019

Summary

The tourniquet used in upper extremity surgical interventions provides a bloodless environment in the operation field, allowing anatomical structures to be seen better, reducing the amount of bleeding and shortening the operation time. Although the use of tourniquet has significant benefits for the surgical procedure, when tourniquet pressures and tourniquet times are not taken into consideration; Tourniquet can cause tissue edema, loss of muscle and nerve strength, vascular damage and compartment syndrome. In long-term tourniquet applications, ischemic reperfusion damage in tissues and neuropraxia or permanent nerve damage may occur in nerves. In this study, we aimed to investigate how different tourniquet durations affect the sensory, motor and sympathetic functions of peripheral nerves in patients undergoing upper extremity surgery, by measuring nerve diameters under ultrasonography (USG) guidance and by making electromyelographic (EMG) measurements of their effects on nerve damage.
