Summary

OBJECTIVE:

It is known that musculoskeletal problems and postural disorders occur as a result of the long-term use of technological devices. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of technology and internet addiction on hamstring muscle shortness and thoracic kyphosis degree in university students.

MATERIAL-METHOD:

A total of 128 students studying at Ege University, Faculty of Health Sciences were included in this cross-sectional study. Hamstring muscle shortness was measured by electrogoniometer and thoracic kyphosis was measured by digital inclinometer. The level of technological addiction of the students was assessed with the “Technology Addiction Scale” and “Internet Addiction Scale”. The relationship between hamstring muscle shortness and thoracic kyphosis degree with technology and internet addiction was calculated by Pearson correlation coefficient.

RESULTS:

The mean age of the 128 university students participating in this study was 20.7 ± 1.5 years and the mean BMI was 22.5 kg/m². 72.7% of the participants were female and 23.3% were male. 29.7% of the participants were involved in sports activities. The mean kyphosis angle of the participants was 33.7 ± 8.5 degrees, right hamstring muscle shortness was 20.0 ± 13.2 degrees and left hamstring muscle shortness was 18.7 ± 12.5 degrees. A very low correlation was observed between individuals' technology and internet addiction levels and thoracic kyphosis angle and hamstring muscle shortness. However, these weak correlations were not statistically significant (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION:

No significant relationship was found between hamstring muscle shortness and thoracic kyphosis degree and technology and internet addiction. In order to demonstrate the results more effectively, studies with higher numbers of cases and more objective analyses are needed.

KEYWORDS:

University, thoracic kyphosis, hamstring, technology, and internet addiction
