Synthesis and Characterization of Glucosamine Ligands

Project no. 32078 · Status: Kapanmış · 2023

Summary

It is important to find and develop synthesis pathways of carbohydrates, which have an important place for living life. Glucosamine is one of the most abundant monosaccharides. Glucosamine, an aminosugar derivative, is a part of the structure of polysaccharides, chitosan and chitin. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are natural structural elements of joint cartilage and have an important role in maintaining and repairing cartilage. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are accepted as nutritional supplements rather than medicines in our country, as in many other countries. Today, in studies on the treatment of many diseases, different drug delivery systems are being investigated to direct drugs to the target organ. The place of chiral compounds is extremely important, especially in the pharmaceutical industry, and in this context, asymmetric synthesis is one of the most important research areas in organic chemistry and pharmacology. The importance of the relationship between pharmacological effect and chirality was revealed in the 1960s when Thalidomide was administered to pregnant women. While (R)-Thalidomide has anti-nausea properties, the (S)-enantiomer has caused birth defects. The importance of chiral compounds is increasing day by day, so studies on the synthesis of these compounds are accelerating. There is also increasing interest in the chirality of coordination compounds. In addition, copper complexes of Schiff-base ligands containing chiral binaphthol groups have been used in many reactions as active catalysts and are compounds of serious importance in biological applications, especially as antimicrobial and anticancer. Low toxicity, easy and economical synthesis are among the reasons for the interest in Schiff bases. For this purpose, in this project, sugar-based coumarin structures that are not included in the literature will be introduced to the literature. In addition, sugar groups are expected to provide solubility in water and to show a more effective anticancer activity due to the imine bond by synthesizing these new Schiff bases. Accordingly, it is aimed to realize syntheses with a planned activity guidance within the scope of the project.

The structure and purity of the ligands synthesized in the project were caharacterized by 1H and 13C NMR, IR, melting point and optical flip angle analysis methods.
