Lexical, Collocatioanal and Discursive Opposition Pattern of Contemporary Turkish
Project no. 837 · Status: Kapanmış · 2014
Summary
This project study aims to determine the antonymy patterns of Turkish adjectives. Typically, the opposite meaning between adjective-type words is different from other word-to-word meaning relations, and is constructed in a lexicographical way as a network of dynamic relations. Antonymy, typically is seen between adjectives, is structured in lexicon as a network of dynamic relations, unlike other lexical- semantic relations. This dynamism is caused by the change of nouns modified by adjective and opposite adjective. Non-canonical pairs formed by contextual variables, as well as canonical pairs, which have a certain regularity depending on the high co-occrunve frequency and lexical association, have an important place in the lexicon. Even the fact that non-canonical pairs are much more than canonical pairs prove that the antonymy relations are not static list in the lexicon. This study is both corpus-based and corpus-driven for purposes. In order to verify the assumption that contextual variability of lexical opposition relations, all adjective entries consisting of one word in the Turkish Dictionary have been inquiried in Turkish National Corpus. Semantic range of each adjective consisting of nouns in 3-word window from right are determined. By means of the pattern interface on the web page prepared for the study, each name included in the semantic range of the other adjectives is encoded in the form of a cyclic pattern. Thus, a database has been created for possible opposites of the members who form a canonical pair, varying according to the nouns they describe. Aside from these variables based on co-ordinated relations, antonyms that characterize a nonce formation that is largely discursive can be identified through this database. As a result of the study, it is seen that some built-in knowledge and evidence of opposition are open to questioning, canocicity of pairs is determined by various factors and contextual variables are much more than we thought. The created data-base is not only antonymy but also an important source for different observations and studies such as synonymy and semantic prosody.
