INACTIVE DESIGN AND MODELING OF 44Ti / 44Sc GENERATOR SYSTEM

Project no. 20118 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2018

Summary

Interest in new PET radionuclides has been increasing in recent days. Especially, the production methods, usage areas and studies of these isotopes with metallic properties are developing day by day. Experiments with such probes, which have a suitable half-life and can provide ease of use in diagnosis and treatment, are frequently available in international studies. Among them, the suitability of the generator products for the studies has led to a different interest in this field. Each generator has a certain life time. The longer these are, the simpler to use. The half-life of the 44Ti isotope selected for this project is approximately 60 years, making it convenient to work with a single generator for many years. The 44Sc, which will be eluted from this generator, has taken an important step towards becoming an ideal PET radionuclide since its half-life is approximately 4 hours and it emits positron. In the first phase of the project, the occurrence of the production of 44Ti, which is the main radioisotope, in the cyclotron was theoretically calculated. The most suitable reaction for production is (p, 2n) reaction, and other possible radionuclide impurities can be reduced to negligible levels after a certain cooling period. The energy, flux, angle and irradiation time of the proton beam were calculated using specific modeling codes. The most important of these is Empire3.2 / Malta code. This code gives specific reaction cross sections at specific energies for the desired reaction. Based on these cross sections, the activity rates that will occur as a result of irradiation were calculated with the MATLAB code. Which isotopes can be formed is also determined by the code Empire3.2 / Malta. In addition, the energy decrease that will occur during bombardment is modeled with SRIM-TRIM. Separation of the main isotope 44Ti, which will be formed after bombardment, from the target system, and optimization of the separation and purification studies were carried out using inactive Ti and Sc. Hydroxamate and dowex resin is used for this. It was examined in HPLC system after chemical separation optimization. With this project, a 44Ti/44Sc generator system has been designed for the first time in our country, paving the way for the production of new PET radionuclides and will be an inspiration for the work to be done. If it is made suitable for hospital use, a hospital will have the opportunity to work with this generator for many years with a single production.
