Investigation of the Mechanical Properties of Glass Fibre Epoxy Composites Produced with the Combined Addition of Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Boron Nitride (BN) Nanopowders

Project no. 32644 · Status: Kapanmış · 2024

Summary

Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are widely used in various applications such as the aerospace, transportation, defense, automotive, marine, and construction industries due to their availability, light weight, and excellent mechanical and chemical properties.

A review of literature studies has shown that using silicon carbide (SiC) and boron nitride (BN) nanopowders separately at different weight or volume percentages improves the mechanical and wear properties of metal-matrix composites. Inspired by this, we will investigate the changes in the mechanical properties of polymer-matrix composites caused by combined reinforcements, namely silicon carbide (SiC) and boron nitride (BN) nanopowders, both together and at different weight ratios. The aim is to achieve improvements in mechanical properties with the additive composites compared to the unadded composite. The aim is to produce a more durable and rigid composite.

In this project, the mechanical properties of silicon carbide (SiC) and boron nitride (BN) reinforced epoxy matrix glass fiber-reinforced hybrid composites will be experimentally determined. It will be determined at which weight percentages the combined reinforcement effect exhibits higher mechanical properties compared to the pure glass fiber epoxy composite. For this purpose, the weight percentage of fillers in the epoxy resin was adopted as the process parameter to enhance the mechanical properties of the composite.

The hybrid glass fiber composite will be produced by adding nanopowder fillers SiC and boron nitride as reinforcements using the hand lay-up method and vacuum infusion method. During the composite material production process, the weight percentage of boron nitride (BN) nanopowder will be kept constant at 1%, and the weight percentages of silicon carbide (SiC) nanopowder will be varied as 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3%. These nanopowder ratios will be calculated based on the weight of the resin to be used.

This study is crucial because boron nitride, a domestic product of Turkey, which has one of the world's richest boron resources, will be used as an additive in the production of glass fiber composites, which have a wide range of applications.
