Evaluation of Different Prophylactic Agents on Shear Bond Strength (SBS) of Orthodontic Buttons

Project no. 23502 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022

Summary

Aim: The aim of the study is to examine the effect of prophylaxis varnishes containing sodium fluoride (NaF) and casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), applied before fixed orthodontic treatment to prevent white spot lesions, on the shear bond strength of orthodontic buttons.

Method: Premolar teeth extracted at Ege University Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery were included in the study. 174 premolar teeth are divided into 3 groups. The 1st group was determined as the fluoride varnish applied group, the 2nd group as the CPP-ACP varnish applied group, and the 3rd group as the control group without any prophylaxis agent. Following the prophylaxis application, the teeth were brushed with a toothbrush twice a day for 1 week without using toothpaste in order to imitate the mechanical wear of the varnish in the mouth. All groups were kept in artificial saliva throughout the experiment period. At the end of the one-week period, orthodontic buttons were bonded on the teeth, and then the teeth were embedded in silicone molds prepared to be used in the universal testing machine. Force was applied to the orthodontic buttons in the samples placed in the universal testing device until the buttons are debonded and the shear bond strength values were recorded. Following the shear bond strength tests, the buccal surface of each tooth was examined with a stereomicroscope under 10x magnification, and ARI scoring was made by evaluating the amount of adhesive remaining on the surfaces of the teeth.

Results: It was determined that the shear bond strength of the CPP-ACP group was 13,01±4,56 MPa, the shear bond strength of the fluoride group was 10,67±3,91 MPa, and the shear bond strength of the control group was 10,90±3,25 MPa. A statistically significant difference was found between the shear bond strength values of the groups (p<0,005). When pairwise comparisons of the groups were evaluated, it was determined that the shear bond strength of the CPP-ACP group was higher than the shear bond strength of the fluoride group and the control group (p = 0,014, p = 0,017,respectively). The difference between the shear bond strength of the fluoride group and the control group is below the level of statistical significance (p = 1,000). The difference between the ARI scores of the groups was not statistically significant

(p = 0,679).

Conclusion: It was determined that the shear bond strength of the orthodontic buttons in the fluoride varnish applied group and the shear bond strength of the orthodontic buttons in the control group were close to each other, and the shear bond strength of the orthodontic buttons in the CPP-ACP varnish applied group was higher than the other two groups. Considering the ARI scores, it was determined that there was no difference between the groups. In the light of the findings obtained in our study, it was determined that fluoride varnish and CPP-ACP varnish could be preferred for caries prophylaxis, considering their effects on the bond strength of orthodontic buttons.
