Evaluation of the Effects of Patching Treatment on Dry Eye Tests and Tear Osmolarity in Children with Amblyopia
Project no. 24181 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022
Summary

Amblyopia is one of the important causes of monocular vision loss in children. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent amblyopia. Treatment options include closure of the dominant eye, penelization with atropine drops, and optical penelization. Patching therapy has been the gold standard treatment of amblyopia for many years.

Dry eye disease is a multifactorial disease of the tear film layer and ocular surface that seriously reduces the comfort of daily life. Its prevalence worldwide varies between 5% and 34%. Dry eye can be divided into two subtypes. A- Decrease in tear secretion (Aqueous insufficiency) and B- Increase in tear evaporation (Evaporative type).

In children with patching therapy due to amblyopia, meibomian gland dysfunction may develop in the covered eye. The pathology may become more severe depending on the duration of the patching treatment.

With this study, for the first time in the literature, we evaluated the effects of patching therapy on meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye.
