Determination of Allelic Diversity in Some Local Üçburun Pepper Lines with Molecular Markers

Project no. 23836 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022

Summary

Peppers, used for fresh table use and as food products, and as products produced, are among the vegetable species with a significant economic structure in Turkey and globally. Over the past four years, the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Ege University, has developed a total of 36 new Üçburun pepper lines, and two of these, 'Breeze' and 'Bayraktar,' have been registered as open-pollinated varieties. The aim of this project is to determine procedures that will reveal the genetic structure and allelic diversity of these newly stored Üçburun peppers. The polymorphic treatment markers identified in this study will allow for changes in genetic similarity and genetic distance between pepper lines. As is well known, in many plant species, including pepper, evidence suggests that as the genetic distance between parents increases, the heterosis observed in their F1 hybrids also increases. Molecular genetic markers are currently recognized as an important tool for generating promising hybrid combinations. This project will focus on Üçburun pepper lines currently developed using purely classical breeding methods. However, another ongoing project is developing doubled-haploid Üçburun pepper lines. Therefore, the molecular markers identified within this project will allow us to determine allelic diversity and genetic distances in new Üçburun pepper lines developed in the future. The results are expected to guide crossbreeding to identify new high-performance F1 hybrid Üçburun parent candidates.
