PLGA Nanofiber Wound Dressing Design with Echinacea Purpurea Extract and in vitro Characterization

Project no. 75586 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022

Summary

Today, many studies are carried out on effective and rapid treatments of wounds. One of the most preferred methods in wound treatments is wound dressings. Nanofiber wound dressings produced by electro-spinning method potentially provide a very suitable environment for healing compared to traditional wound bandages that cannot meet all the requirements of the wound healing process. In this study, silver nanoparticle doped PLGA nanofibers containing echinacea extract were produced by electro-spinning method for use as wound dressings. To compare the properties of the produced wound dressings, pure PLGA, silver nanoparticle doped PLGA (AgNP/PLGA) and silver nanoparticle doped PLGA (Ek-AgNP/PLGA) nanofibers containing 1%, 2% and 3% echinacea extract were produced. The fiber structures of the produced nanofibers were evaluated by taking SEM images and their chemical structures were examined by FTIR and XRD analysis. Antibacterial activity test confirmed that the nanofibers produced have antibacterial properties. The antioxidant capacity of echinacea extract added into the material was determined by DPPH method. The applicability of the produced nanofibers in the wound was tested by creating a wound scratch model in vitro and it was determined that 1% Ek-AgNP/PLGA nanofiber wound dressing showed faster wound closure than the other groups. As a result, it was predicted that nanofiber wound dressings with silver nanoparticles containing echinacea extract could be used in wound healing studies.
