Comparative Analysis of Kanban Applications in Medium and Large-Scale Manufacturing Firms
Project no. 23135 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2021
Summary

In material management in manufacturing processes, there are two basic systems: material requirement planning (MRP), which works according to the principles of pushing, and kanban, which works according to the principles of pull. Kanban is a material management tool for just-in-time (JIT) and lean manufacturing (LM) systems, which are Japanese production philosophies. Kanban applications, which started under the leadership of TOYOTA in Japan in the 1980s, gave very successful results under certain conditions of JIT and LM systems. However, it was not possible to apply these conditions in the same way in every country. As a result of both regional differences and paradigmal changes in production management in the process until today, the kanban system is used by modifying it differently from the original according to the conditions of the companies.

In this project, kanban applications in other sectors, especially in manufacturing companies operating in repetitive production sectors such as automotive, electrical electronics and white goods, were analyzed. The project was carried out by applying in-depth interview technique in companies that apply kanban. Data were collected by interviewing the kanban application managers of the companies for the questions determined as a result of literature-based and expert opinions. The current situation of kanban practices in Turkey was analyzed by analyzing the textual data collected with open-ended questions. In addition, another output of this project is to reveal the differences between the kanban applications of medium and large-scale companies.

In both national and international literature, there are many studies on analyzing JIT and LM practices according to countries and sectors. However, kanban is included in a very narrow scope in these analyzes. In addition, in our country, there is no study on analyzing the kanban system in companies.
