Determination of selected endocrine disrupting chemicals in wastewater discharging to sea and designing photocatalytic system in order to increase the efficiency of wastewater treatment system

Project no. 1164 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017

Summary

Estrone (E1), 17ß-estradiol (17ß-E2) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are included in the group of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), are at the focal point of this research as important pollutants of the environment especially aquatic environment. A laboratory scale treatment system was designed to eliminate these impurities at the point of discharge of treatment plants as the main spreading point. Artificial wastewater samples containing the monitored chemicals were subjected to photocatalytic treatment in different processes. Samples were concentrated using appropriate methods and analytical instruments (HPLC and GC-MS) were investigated for measurement of changes in concentrations of target contaminants. After the statistical analysis on the data, the most efficient treatment condition was determined. The monitoring part of the study was carried out from June 2017 to June 2018 on the samples of the effluent from the İTOB-OSB Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). After the extraction step, target analytes were determined in the samples. Also, real waste water samples were subjected to optimized treatment conditions. The results clearly show that photolytic and photocatalytic methods can eliminate pollutants from effluent of WWTP. Based on the results, application of researched methods strongly recommended in treatment plants as additional treatment mechanisms in the real scale.
