Project no. 912 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017

Summary

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the breastfeeding status of vaginal and cesarean-delivered primiparous mothers in the first 24 hours. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive and analytical study evaluating the mode of delivery and breastfeeding. The study group consisted of mothers who were delivered at Tepecik Training and Research Hospital of Health Sciences University between April 1, 2018 and July 30, 2018 and met the inclusion criteria. The data of the study were collected by the researchers by using the face-to-face interview technique and the socio-demographic questionnaire was performed by the LATCH Breastfeeding Diagnostic Measurement Tool. In the first 24 hours of delivery, breastfeeding was evaluated by using LATCH Breastfeeding Diagnostic Measurement Tool 3 times, 6 hours after birth, 12 hours and 24 hours. Results: The rate of initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour was 83.3% and 43.1%, respectively. While 94.4% of the vaginally delivered babies were given colostrum, this rate was found to be 80.6% in mothers with cesarean section. There was a significant difference between vaginal and caesarean section mothers in terms of breastfeeding time and postpartum colostrum delivery (p <0.05). There was no significant difference between the scores obtained from the LATCH diagnostic tool between vaginal and cesarean delivery mothers in the 1st and 3rd applications, while a significant difference was obtained in the second application (p <0.05). Conclusion: It has been observed that the mode of delivery affects the breastfeeding behavior, especially in the first hour. Keywords: Breastfeeding, Vaginal Birth, Cesarean Birth
