Development of a Shoe Upper Knitted With Environmentally Friendly, Sustainable Yarns

Project no. 23786 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022

Summary

In this study, the aim is to develop fully fashion knitted structures from environmentally friendly materials that can be used as soles in everyday shoes, in different knitted fabric constructions. Within this scope, fabrics produced in four different types of knit, which can be preferred for the upper part of shoes, were tested for their physical, dimensional, thermal comfort, hydrophilic and capillary properties. These fabrics were produced by blending hemp fiber with Tencel® and recycled cotton fibers in proportions of 25% and 50%. The results obtained were statistically evaluated in three separate groups, considering the type of material, the type of knitted construction, and the combined effect of material and construction.

Based on the consideration of shoe performance and comfort requirements, it is recommended that fabrics made with 100% Tencel® and/or Tencel®/hemp blended yarns, using single jersey or foldable structures, be used as soles for shoes. Additionally, due to its higher strength compared to single jersey and foldable structures, the preference for mesh knitted structures is suggested, as it would provide advantages in terms of the lifespan of the shoes, while also demonstrating positive results in terms of comfort.
