Determination of Inorganic Arsenic Species in Various Water Resources and Development of Superior Adsorbent(s) to Remove These Arsenic(III) and Arsenic(V) Species and Their Application to Water Samples

Project no. 25266 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2023

Summary

Arsenic is a source of risk for water all over the world.. Because the toxicity of the species found in water varies greatly, determining the relative amounts of each species, in addition to the total concentration, is crucial and requires accurate determination. While most analysis methods use speciation, the interference between species prevents accurate results. Based on this shortcoming, the project planned to develop both an accurate and rapid analysis method and an adsorbent that could prevent this arsenic contamination.

The automated hydride system analysis method was optimized to determine measurement conditions that prevent arsenic species from interfering with each other and allow for the concentration of individual species to be determined. Optimum experimental conditions were determined: 0.3 M HCl acid concentration, 200 µL sample volume, and a single-repeat reading time of 15 seconds.

Numerous adsorbents were prepared for arsenic removal. The most effective method for removing arsenic species was determined to be the nickel-coated type, which uses NaOH in magnetite preparation. It was anticipated that the nano-sized Fe@Ni adsorbent would have much higher capacity and surface area. However, considering that flow would be impossible with the small particle size in column applications, magnetite nickel adsorbent (R@Fe@Ni) coated on resin was also used in the experiments. Experiments continued with two types of adsorbents and two types of arsenic.

Surface imaging, characterization, and adsorption experiments were conducted on the prepared materials. It was determined that both materials were effective in removing arsenic and, despite not being reported in the literature, were patentable.
