EVALUATION OF THE PERFORMANCE OF HEMP BAST FIBERS IN THE PRODUCTION OF PACKAGING PAPER WITH DIFFERENT WASTE PAPER BLENDS
Project no. 21080 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019
Summary
In this thesis, eligibility of hemp bast fibers for the pulp and paper industries was evaluated and blending with waste paper pulp studies were carried out to provide a guide for the pulp and paper industries. The expected scarcity for procurement of wood based fiber sources directed papermakers to search for alternative sources like non-woods. Hemp bast fiber is a potential source of pulping as a raw material. In hemp bast fibers preparation step, firstly the length of fibers was reduced to 4 mm. Then, kraft pulping was applied to them. Together with preparation of waste paper pulps, hemp bast fiber-waste paper hand sheets were prepared according to blending plan. Finally, paper strength tests were applied to the hand sheets. The properties of raw, cooked and beaten hemp bast fibers were investigated by characterization methods such as OM, XRD and FTIR. Also, the carbohydrate components, solubility and ash content tests were applied to raw hemp bast fibers. As a result of the experiments and analyses, targeted results were achieved. It was concluded that pulp of hemp bast fibers can be used in proper blends of waste paper pulp where the end product’s strength values are desired to be increased such as CMT, CCT, RCT, SCT, stiffness, tear resistance or decreased such as air resistance, after solving fibrillation problem
