Project no. 73 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

Introduction Fever is the frequent symptoms to admitted the emergency room in adults. In adults, body temperature above 38.3 0C is considered fever. NSAII and paracetamol are commonly used in treatment. In our study, we aimed to investigate the effects of intravenous forms of NSAII derivative ibuprofen and paracetamol on fever response in a randomized controlled study. Our study is the first comparing the fever efficacy of iv ibuprofen and iv paracetamol for acute patient admission in emergency departments. Material –Method Patients were included to the randomized controlled, double-blind study between July and December 2019 with fever of 380 C at the emergency department, ages between 18-65 years. IV ibuprofen (400 mg) and iv paracetamol (1000 mg) were given to patients who met the inclusion criteria and received consent form , Drugs given by double-blind design in a 30-minute infusion. Exclusion cirteria was renal or hepatic failure, gastric bleeding history, presence of malignancy, asthma, COPD, presence of bleeding diabetes, pregnancy, presence of analgesic or antipyretic drug use before application, ibuprofen or paracetamol allergy, which are contraindicated for both drugs. Patients with a history, shock, or resuscitative procedure and patients who could not give consent were not included in the study. Fever and symptom follow-up of the patients were evaluated at 0, 15, 30, 45, 60th minutes. Age, gender, complaint, fever, presence of additional symptoms, and need for medication were recorded on the data collection form. Results: 200 men, 100 men, 100 women, participated in the study. There was no difference between the groups. The age means was 30.77 ± 10.61 and the most common complaint was fever. The mean initial fever was 38.79 ± 0.47 0C for ibuprofen and 38.70 ± 0.52 0C for paracetamol. The fever response was received for an average of 45 minutes for both drugs. In the comparison of fever response, both drugs were effective in reducing fever (p <0.001), but no significant difference was found compared to each other (p = 0.98). When the accompanying symptoms improved, no significant difference was found between the drugs (p = .0,22). Conclusion: No statistically significant difference was found between iv 400 mg ibuprofen and iv 1000 mg paracetamol in patients admitted to the emergency department with fever.
