Production of Flame-Retardant Cotton Fabric Using Carbon Nanotubes

Project no. 75583 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022

Summary

The aim of this project study is the design and production of flame retardant cotton fabric using carbon nanotube. For this purpose, different concentrations of hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube solutions were transferred onto cotton fabrics using a new method called layer-by-layer coating (LBL). After the applications, untreated and treated cotton fabrics were tested and analyzed. The performed tests and analyzes are as follow: vertical burning test, LOI test, tensile strength, and electrical resistance tests. In addition, SEM, TGA and FTIR analyzes were carried out to examine the surface morphology of the fabrics, to characterize their thermal and decomposition properties, and to determine their bonding functional groups, respectively. As a result, when only APP was transferred onto the cotton fabric, LOI value was 26.8%. When APP and 5% CNT was transferred onto the cotton fabric, LOI value was 36.6%. Moreover, when only APP was transferred onto the fabric, the char length was 7.5 cm. When 5% CNT was transferred onto the fabric, the char length was 5.5 cm. In addition, with CNT transfer, the thermal resistance of the cotton fabric increased, the breaking strength did not decrease, and the fabric gained anti-static properties. According to the results of SEM and FTIR analyzes, it has been proven that APP and CNT were transferred onto the cotton fabrics successfully.
