An Examination of Pre-service Teachers’ Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence, Competencies, Attitudes, and Anxieties During Technology Integration in Science Education
Project no. 33085 · Status: Kapanmış · 2025
Summary

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within educational frameworks has the potential to enhance the relevance and appeal of learning experiences by providing adaptive learning opportunities that are aligned with students' individual academic aptitudes and levels. In the context of science education, in particular, AI has been shown to facilitate student comprehension of complex and abstract concepts by offering personalised learning experiences. In this context, the analysis of the current state of preservice science teachers is deemed crucial as a prerequisite for the development process of a STEM-focused generative AI program intended to be designed for them. The present preliminary study aims to investigate the use of generative AI by preservice science teachers, in addition to their competencies, attitudes, anxieties, and views on the integration of AI in science instruction. The quantitative phase of this mixed-methods study was conducted with 187 undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Science Education at Ege University and Aydın Adnan Menderes University, while the qualitative phase was carried out with 11 undergraduate students. The findings indicated that the majority of teacher candidates had not previously received training in AI but were partially familiar with it; they frequently used AI tools; they preferred Chat GPT the most; and they used it mostly for assignments, projects, and course material studies. Additionally, the participants exhibit a moderate-to-high level of perceived competency and usage of generative AI. It is anticipated that this research will contribute to the development of practice-based strategies for the responsible and conscious integration of generative AI, specifically within the field of science education.

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Science Education, STEM, Teacher Education, Preservice Teachers
