Evaluation of the Efficacy of CoronaVac Vaccine in Cancer Patients Receiving Immunotherapy (ITCOVAC)

Project no. 23091 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2021

Summary

Currently, vaccination is the most effective method for protection against COVID-19, which still has no specific treatment. Given the significant risk of infections in cancer patients, the safety and efficacy of these vaccinations need to be further evaluated especially stratifying by treatment types they receive. Focusing on this need, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of the CoronaVac vaccine in cancer patients receiving immunotherapy. 32 patients diagnosed with melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, and non-small cell lung cancer were included. The seroconversion rate after the second dose of the vaccine was found to be 65.6%, and during the 52-week follow-up, only two patients, one of whom was not proven, showed signs of Covid-19. While immune-related side effects were observed in 22% of the patients, the vaccine did not cause an increase in the prevalence, thus it was concluded to be safe in this regard. However, our findings require validation through larger and more comprehensive studies.
