Development of an Analytical Method for the Determination of Bisphenol A Using New Generation Green Deep Eutectic Solvents and Its Use in Determining Pollution at Different Points in the Gediz River

Project no. 32304 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2024

Summary

The extensive use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in the production of industrial plastics has resulted in high levels of BPA in water resources and water treatment plants in highly industrialised areas. BPA enters water bodies via waste plastics and contributes to water pollution. It is one of the endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) that can harm human health even at extremely low concentrations. It is a prevalent environmental oestrogen found in environmental and wastewater products, including plastic food packaging, canned goods, baby care products, reusable cups, medical devices, and other consumer goods. It has been found to have harmful effects on the environment and human health, particularly affecting the reproductive, immune, embryonic, nervous, endocrine and respiratory systems.

Due to high levels of BPA in environmental waters reaching concentrations that may affect human health, analytical methods capable of determining low levels of BPA in water samples are necessary. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are used as green solvents in analytical methods for this purpose. DES solvents are a new type of environmentally friendly solvent used in analytical chemistry to extract and separate target compounds from various samples. DES compounds are solvent mixtures obtained by combining two or three component solvents. Hydrogen bonding between these components results in a eutectic solvent system with a lower melting point than its constituent components. The most important features of DESs are their liquid state at temperatures below 150 °C and their low freezing point. DESs replace expensive, flammable and toxic organic solvents that are commonly used in many applications and eliminate their disadvantages.

The aim of this project proposal is to develop a fast, easy, inexpensive and environmentally friendly analytical method with high preconcentration efficiency that can be used as an alternative to standard methods. To this end, a new method will be developed.
