Drinking Water Analysis and Removal of Heavy Metals in Water by Electrochemical Methods
Project no. 20505 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019
Summary
For the continuation of human life, water is of vital importance. An odorless, colorless and normal tasted water can bring into safety for humans, but water can contain a number of pollutants under such a clear view. Between these pollutants, the most encountered one is heavy metals and heavy metals can cause a serious health problems from cancer to collective food poisoning, as well as end of life. According to the recent developments about water, extent of heavy metals in drinking water is reaching dangerous levels and current state is raising doubt in society about food. Also, World Health Organization (WHO) and Europian Union (EU) want to inform everbody about the content of all type of drinking water from tap water to plastic bottle water. Therefore, improvement of new and sensitive technologies is necessary to make analysis and treatment of water. In this project, two independent methods including inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and electrochemistry were connected to treat drinking water. ICP-MS is a highly sensible and multi-element capable method, so it is standing out amongst other heavy metals determination methods. Based on this, heavy metals content of drinking water samples coming from various resources were determined using ICP-MS. To remove lead, mercury and arsenic present in drinking water, electrochemical techniques were used and nano-dimensional new surfaces were created to obtain specific lead, mercury and arsenic behavior. Structures of the modified surfaces were clarified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In this way, electrodeposition was successfully applied to achieve metal-free water samples.
