Production and Characterization of Collagen Hydrolysate/Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol Based Biocomposite Films from Leather Industry Trimming Wastes

Project no. 31949 · Status: Kapanmış · 2023

Summary

Biodegradable polymers are being widely used in reducing plastic waste for ecological sustainability, but the use of biodegradable films instead of synthetic polymers prepared from natural polymers is quite limited due to their poor water barrier properties. Therefore, this study aims to prepare new environmentally friendly polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)/chitosan(KTS)/collagen hydrolysate(KH)-based films using the cost-effective solvent casting method and examine the effect of collagen hydrolysate content on film performance Molecular weight distribution of collagen hydrolysate was determined by SDS-PAGE. The thickness, moisture content, water solubility (%), water vapor permeability, color, light transmittance and mechanical properties of the PVA/KTS and PVA/KTS/KH based films were determined. Compared with the 50PVA/50KTS-based control film, the water barrier and mechanical properties of the composite films were greatly improved, especially in the 30PVA/30KTS/40KH film sample. FTIR spectra showed that there were interactions through hydrogen bonding between the polar groups of the KH in the film formulations and the hydroxyl moieties of KTS and PVA, and the addition of KH increased the compatibility between the three polymers. Overall, the results show that the use of collagen hydrolysate from leather industry trimming waste provides a sustainable option that can improve green packaging film properties for application in the development of more sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging systems.
