Studies on Improving of Seed Quality in Dill Seed Production
Project no. 1286 · Status: Kapanmış · 2014
Summary
The study was conducted at Ege University Odemis Vocational School fields and laboratories and Ege University Faculty of Agriculture, Horticulture laboratory during 2015-2018 to determine how growing cycle and fruit position on the mother plant affect yield, and seed quality in dill seed production. The dill cultivar cv 'Gönen' was used as plant material. The effects of spring (20.03.2016) and autumn seed sowing time (29.09.2016) and umbel position on the mother plant (primary, secondary, tertiary etc.) on the phenological characteristics, (the number of days to flower initiation and flower formation) seed yield characteristics (plant height, the number of umbels/plant, the size of primary, secondary and tertiary umbels, number of umbellates/umbel and seed weight/umbel, seed yield/plant) and seed quality characteristics (germination and emergence rate) were determined. Autumn seed sowing time was extended number of days to flower initiation and flower formation while spring sowing time was shortened. Spring sowing time had higher umbel size, the number of umbellates/umbel and seed weight/umbel compared to the spring sowing time. Umbel sizes, umbellates number and seed weight decresed with increasing umbel number. Seed germination and emergence rates were determined to be high at spring sowing time. It was also found that the highest germination and emergence rates were obtained from the primary umbel, and that the secondary and tertiary umbels reduced germination and emergence rates. It can be concluded that autumn seed sowing time may be recommended in terms of seed yield but spring sowing time should be preferred due to the quality of seed in the production of seed dill. Also, umbel position on the main plant is effective on both seed yield and seed quality. For this reason, it is considered that at least two stages (primary umbrella + secondary-tertiary umbrella) of the seed harvest will increase yield and quality
