Summary

In the project, it is aimed to produce aluminum-based ceramic reinforced nanocomposite materials in order to be used in the automotive and aerospace industries where lightness and strength properties are expected to be high. Aluminum powders and ceramic nano zirconium oxide (ZrO2) particles have been subjected to mechanical alloying to ensure uniform distribution of the reinforcing particles in the structure. The dispersion of reinforcing particles in the structure has a significant effect on the mechanical properties of the material produced. For this reason, the mechanical alloying process is carried out at different times and the distribution of nano reinforcing particles in the structure is examined depending on the mechanical alloying time. With the increase in the mechanical alloying time, it was observed that the nano ZrO2 reinforcing particles dispersed more uniformly in the microstructure. However, the distribution of different amounts of nano ZrO2 particles in the microstructure was also examined and it was found that uniform reinforcement particle distribution could be obtained in longer mechanical alloying times with the increase of nano ZrO2 particles. Aluminum powders, which are alloyed with nano ZrO2 particles by mechanical alloying process, were subjected to hot pressing process from powder metallurgy methods and then aluminum based nano ZrO2 particle reinforced composite material was produced. Density, hardness and compression tests were applied to determine the physical and mechanical properties of the produced nanocomposite materials. It was observed that with the increase of nano ZrO2 reinforcement particles, the density decreased and the hardness values increased. While compressive strength of nanocomposites increased continuously up to a certain reinforcement rate, it was found that if the amount of reinforcement was increased too much, it affects compressive strength negatively. As a result, appropriate mechanical alloying times and nano ZrO2 reinforcing particle quantities were determined and aluminum composite materials with high mechanical properties such as hardness and compressive strength were successfully produced by powder metallurgy process.
