Investigation of urinary circular RNAs as a potential biomarker in the diagnosis of bladder cancer.

Summary

Bladder cancer is the 10th most diagnosed cancer in the world. Many risk factors such as social, environmental, occupational and genetic factors, and dietary habits play an important role in the development of bladder cancer. In newly diagnosed bladder cancer, the disease is limited to the mucosa or submucosa. This group of diseases is called non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). In this case, the initial diagnosis and follow-up of bladder cancer are made with urinary system imaging, cystoscopic examination, and urine cytology. Bladder cancer is diagnosed with transurethral resection of suspicious lesions detected during cystoscopy under anesthesia and histopathological examination of the specimen obtained. Cystoscopy is an invasive procedure that requires local or systemic anesthesia, equipment, technical experience, and financial resources. Cytological evaluation may be affected by low cell density, urinary system infections, stones, and intravesical applications. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a highly specific and sensitive urinary biomarker for the detection of bladder cancer. In this project proposal, expression profiling of 15 circular RNAs reported to be regulated in the AKT, VEGF, TGF-B, MAPK/ERK, WNT/B catenin signaling pathways, which have been associated with bladder cancer and other urinary system pathogenesis, will be performed in urine samples of a total of 50 cases and controls. As a result of this study, the place of circRNAs identified in the literature in the diagnosis of bladder cancer and their potential as biomarkers will be investigated with bioinformatic analysis.
